Abstract: Recent publications of experimental English-language haiku have raised a hotly debated question: Do such poems represent the avant-garde of 21st century haiku, or are they "haiku" only because a poet or editor claims that they are? This essay explores this question, beginning with a 17th-century haiku written by the Japanese master Matsuo Basho. An examination of Basho's poem shows that haiku has been an experimental genre since its inception that has required readers to fill in gaps by using their imaginations. However, when we compare Basho's poem with some recent postmodern English-language haiku, it soon becomes clear that poets are leaving so much to the reader's interpretation that their verses have ceased to function as haiku in the traditional sense. Whether these experiments represent the future of haiku or not haiku at all must be decided by poets, readers, editors, and critics. This essay attempts to begin this important inquiry.

Although non-verb haiku are a relatively small group as compared to verb-containing haiku, they reveal a rich semantic content. Interesting cases, such as haiku expressing movement and feelings, are analyzed together with the usual beingness and identification which non-verb sentences presuppose.

The article examines the problem of semi-openness on the basis of a G. Bachelard’s idea mentioned in his “Poetics of space”. Speech closes through meaning while through poetic expression it opens. Movements of "opening and closing are so numerous, so reversible, so tentative" that the philosopher suggests the following wording: "man is essentially semi-open being". In the article Bachelard's ideas are extended by analyzing examples from the field of belles-letters. They cover the existential meanings attributed to the half-open door, eyes, lips, and the so-called mixed objects - object-subjects, which according to the French philosopher open themselves like us and create a sense of intimacy. The idea of semi-openness can be associated from psychoanalytic point of view with melancholy and the accompanying splitting of the personality. It is therefore devoted considerable attention to the way in which psychoanalytic concept of "crypt" appears in the T. Gautier’s work.

Abstract: This article is an attempt to present some essential aspects of the authentic Chinese wisdom that is not based on rational and absolutist constructs as is the Western thought. It discusses the problem of the relation of language to the reality. Its main thesis derived from the Zhuangzi’s treatise is that language is not able to capture entities, it cannot reach or reflect the reality. The article presents the main difference in the philosophical premises of East and West – while the Western thought and logic is built on the idea of substance and entities, the Eastern thought penetrates the understanding of Void, the process of relativity.
