200 YEARS SINCE THE BIRTH OF FRIEDRICH ENGELS (1820-1895)

The name of Friedrich Engels is always associated with the name of Karl Marx, and it is usually added that Marx was the greater theorist and that their teaching was rightly called "Marxism", though it was created by them both. However, few only know that, as it is clear from the article below, Engels' long-term material support for Marx and his family made possible the publication of Marx's works and the spread of their ideas during their lifetime. NOTA BENE celebrates Engels' bicentennial with a translation of the article about him in the Encyclopedia Britannica; https://www.britannica.com/biography/Friedrich-Engels.
The article was written by Oscar Hammen, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Montana, Missoula, author of The Red '48ers: Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels. The translation is done by Kamen Lozev.
